When I first started stepping into leadership roles, I often found myself at large conference tables—frequently the only woman in the room – feeling small at work.
I remember a scene from Ally McBeal, where she is sitting in a big chair, sharing her perspective. As she speaks, she imagines herself shrinking—getting smaller and smaller—her influence fading in her own mind.
That image stuck with me.
Because I felt that way too – feeling small at work, even when I head earned my place.
You might call it imposter syndrome.
But more than anything, it’s perception.
The question is:
Is that perception reality?
Awareness: Feeling Small at Work and Owning Your Feelings
Looking around the room and not seeing someone who looks like you—or reflects the path you’ve taken—can feel unsettling. This is something I see often in individuals coach.
These feelings are often subtle:
- hesitation
- overthinking
- a lack of ease
In moments like this, focusing on small wins in life can help you regain momentum and begin to move forward with clarity.
The first step is awareness.
Acknowledge what you’re feeling—but don’t immediately accept it as truth.
Ask:
- Why do I feel this way?
- Did something actually happen, or am I interpreting the environment through my own lens? Research shows that Perception is Not Reality—even when they aren’t fully grounded in reality.
Then ground yourself in the facts:
You earned your seat at the table.
Through your experience.
Your perspective.
Your ability.
That is reality.
Not the narrative playing in your mind.
Shift: Learning to Trust Your Perspective
Self-doubt is normal. Everyone experiences it—whether they admit it or not.
But here’s where the shift happens:
Instead of reinforcing doubt, you begin to trust your perspective. Learning to trust your instincts in decision-making isn’t always easy, but it often reveals what overthinking tries to obscure.
A mentor once said to me:
“Everyone in the room matters—but no one matters more than anyone else.”
That stayed with me.
Because it reframed everything.
You do not need to:
- overprepare
- overcompensate
- make yourself smaller to fit the room
When we feel out of place, we often start making decisions from a place of proving.
But proving is not clarity.
Clarity comes from alignment—with what you know to be true.
Clear, Aligned Decisions When Feeling Small at Work
When you recognize the difference between perception and reality, your decisions begin to shift.
Instead of reacting, you reflect.
Ask yourself:
- When have I felt this way before?
- What was actually happening in that moment?
- Was the feedback real—or assumed?
Then return to what you know to be true. Learning how to reset your life without starting over can help you pause, get grounded, and make your next move with intention.
Because transitions don’t usually begin with a plan.
They begin with a feeling.
And that feeling is often your first signal.
Outcomes – What Changes
When you learn to separate perception from reality, three things begin to shift:
1. You stop shrinking in the moment.
You become more present in conversations—less focused on how you’re being perceived and more focused on what you’re contributing.
2. You make decisions from clarity, not reaction.
Instead of trying to prove your place, you begin to evaluate:
- Is this environment right for me?
- Am I able to contribute fully here?
This is where tools that help you reset and refocus can make a meaningful difference.
3. You recognize when it’s time to move.
Not every environment is meant for you. And that realization isn’t failure—it’s information.
Because sometimes the goal isn’t to adjust yourself…
It’s to find where you don’t have to.
Closing
Looking back, those moments where I felt the smallest were often the ones that taught me the most.
Not about how to fit in—
but about how to stand firmly in who I am.
Because what’s real is:
You don’t become smaller in the room.
You just start believing that you are.
That experience of feeling small at work often isn’t reality—it’s perception.
And once you learn to separate perception from reality, everything begins to shift.
You don’t prove your place.
You own it.
This is the kind of moment where clarity matters most. It’s why I created The Reset Kit.
This brings me to today’s Star Stunning realizations:
- Feeling small is often perception—not a reflection of your actual value.
- Awareness is the first step to clarity. Don’t accept a feeling without understanding it—you owe yourself that before making a judgment.
- Stop trying to prove your place. When you step out of proving mode, you begin making decisions from alignment.
- The right environment doesn’t make you shrink. It allows you to show up fully.
